A few weeks back we moved into a new home. It wasn’t long before we realized that our electricity bill was a bit more expensive. We immediately started replacing some of our normal lights with led bulbs. Needless to say, it didn’t down our costs, but it did get me thinking. What is it about lights that make us associate it with electricity consumption? Moving way back humanity had candles. How did we come to make light bulbs mean anything?

Experience…Experience is key. Whether it is our past experiences or that of our future endeavors. The value of perception is a powerful force. It’s the way competitors are distinguished from one another. It’s the factor that triggers our senses and makes us believe something is more important than other things. Emotional triggers are what drives us to understand Vance Packard, Sigmund Freud and Public relations in a whole different manner. Quite simply put, we cannot replicate an experience that is truly unique either. Consider LED vs normal light bulb. Or what about a light bulb that switches on intelligently…Which would you buy if you had no limit to resources?

Design is a discipline that is found in everything we do since the dawn of civilization started. Whether you consider IXD, UI, UX they all add value. So as a designer/developer keep switching on the lights. Illuminate the darkness of unplanned, unsearched apps and technology around you. Keep on converting those who are trapped in the corporate ideologies of darkness and bringing them to the light of understanding the discipline of humanities & ergonomics.
